Acne facials are one of our most popular skin care treatments here, at our Irvine medical spa. Many clients have a lot of questions about acne facials, but mainly, “do they work?” Here’s what you should know about acne facials.
What is an Acne Facial?
An acne facial is a type of skin care treatment that aims at reducing acne. The treatment usually consists of cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, a facial mask, and the application of skin care products. At Newport Face N Body, our goals during an acne facial are to kill acne-causing bacteria, unclog pores, and reduce oil production.
What are the benefits of Acne Facials?
Acne facials can be a great addition to your acne routine. Regular facials can help clear blackheads and blocked pores. They can also reduce the frequency and severity of a breakout.
What’s Included in an Acne Facial
Depending on the client’s skin, their treatment can vary slightly from client-to-client. The process usually goes in the following order: double-cleanse, exfoliation, extractions, radiofrequency, facial mask, and product application.
The main difference between acne facials and other facials are the extractions and the use of radiofrequency.

Extractions are a key step in acne facials. This is where the facialist manually cleans out your pores. Extractions are the least pleasant part of an acne facial. If you have a lot of blackheads, they likely won’t be able to be extracted in a single session. Also, the facialist can’t extract inflamed blemishes. This can increase the chances of scarring, and actually, worsen acne by spreading bacteria.
The radiofrequency tool has an electrode on the end. The electrode produces argon gas, which is a gas that is particularly good for acne-prone skin. The device also emits a small electrical current. When the radiofrequency device is applied to the skin, it generates oxygen, kills bacteria, and calms inflamed skin.
Acne Facials Might not be Appropriate for all Types of Acne
Acne facials aren’t a complete solution for all types of acne. They are most helpful for mild acne, minor blemishes, and mild comedonal breakouts. That’s not to say that they won’t work for moderate acne as well. It’s important to meet with a facialist to see if your goals are realistic, or if you would benefit better from a dermatologist. Often times, a combination of prescription medications and regular facial treatments are ideal.
Consistency is Key
Acne facials are not a solution for acne. Acne takes time to clear, and much success will come from the client does at home. For best results, you will likely have to commit to a series of treatments (usually once per month) and stay consistent with your skin care regimen.
