Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment used to treat a variety of skin imperfections. One of the most common including acne scarring. Here are 3 things you should know about getting microneedling to minimize the appearance and texture of acne scars.
How Does Microneedling Help With Scarring?
Also referred to as collagen induction therapy, microneedling works by creating tiny channels in the skin in efforts to stimulate your body’s natural healing response.
When the needles puncture the skin, they cause localized damage. Your body responds by producing more collagen to tend to the wound. The result is more even skin.
Microneedling is a popular treatment for acne scars because it’s effective, minimally invasive, and safe.
Microneeding Does Not Eliminate All Types of Acne Scars
Acne scars are a common side-effect of acne. They occur when the skin heals abnormally. Acne scars are from damage to the elastic support structure beneath the skin surface.
There are several types of acne scars:
Ice Pick Scars– Ice pick scars are the most severe types of acne scar because they are deeper and narrower than other types of scars.
- Boxcar Scars– Scars that are round or oval depressions with steep vertical sides.
- Rolling Scars– Scars that cause rolling or wave-like depression in the skin.
- Keloid Scars– Raised, firm scars that appear on the surface of the skin.
Although microneedling is effective at treating most types of acne scars, it won’t always eliminate all types of scars- specifically deeper ones, like ice pick scars.
It takes More Than One Treatment to See a Drastic Difference
Although many clients report seeing results after just one treatment, several treatments are often needed to achieve the desired results. The number of treatments is going to depend on the depth of their acne scars and how their skin responds.
There is minimal recovery time after a microneedling procedure. Depending on the intensity of the treatment (primarily the length of the needles), clients can resume their normal skin care routine in as little as 24 hours.
